Strangers on Paper - DevLog #35

Happy Holidays everyone!

With 2024 almost over, we hope you’re having a wonderful (if not, at least not-too-terribly-stressful) time. As for us, we’re indeed in a very festive mood because we can finally say we are pretty much DONE with everything Steam-related! It’s been the bane of our existence for a while, and now we feel as if this heavy weight has been lifted off our shoulders and, except for some minor adjustments we may need to come up with, we can now devote all our energy just into Chapter 3 of SoP. Just writing that alone feels exciting because, although we are excited to release the game on that platform, it hasn’t really felt like truly moving forward in a while, and both Grogu and I need that as much as we hope you’re looking forward to it.

We will only share a release date once the build gets fully approved by Steam, which should not be too long from now, so, yay! Until then, we’d like to share things we have prepared for that version of the game:

  • Strangers on Paper will be available in English, Chinese and Spanish. And here’s where I’ll just go ahead and say that if you play it in Spanish, I’m sorry, okay? I worked on this translation myself to keep it as close as possible to the source material, yet this was probably my least favorite thing I’ve done while working on this game. I don’t mind writing in my native language, but translating something I’d written myself in English? I cringed way too many times during this very tedious process, but I'm happy that more people will be able to play it because of it.

  • We’ve added some bonus content into the game, including a gallery with images representing some of our favorite moments and unlockable snippets. You may be familiar with these if you’re/have been an Acquaintance or above in our Patreon, they are little stories about Becca or Amy from before the timeline in Strangers on Paper - or in-between chapters as it is the case for one of them. These can be accessed through specific choices that have some sort of relation to the main theme of the snippet itself (you’ll get a little notification thingy if it happens to let you know). Little details like these that expand upon the world of the game are the kind of shit we usually love to work towards ourselves when playing games we love and we hope you enjoy these yourselves as well.

    • Speaking of, our rule of thumb when writing, rendering, planning or overall making any decisions regarding Strangers on Paper has been “let’s make a game we’d like to play”. I’ve mentioned before that there’s some small changes we’ll be introducing in this build, mainly minor fixes to the script in things that we came to notice with time after the release of Chapter 2 and that would have gotten fixed with a future release anyway. The thing is that, since we knew we were introducing content and details that would require players to play the game from the beginning, we had several talks about what things we’d do differently if we had the chance to start things over. Now, if we took ourselves too seriously, we would do a full-on rework and we would never move forward, which is not what we want at all, so we had to choose our priorities wisely. That being said, for the Steam release, there will be a few different lines here and there, a couple new renders the casual player may not even take special notice of, and then there’s some little additions to the one sex scene in Chapter 2. Every time someone has asked us on Patreon or Discord or wherever whether we were planning to keep all sexual content in the “softcore” category, our answer has always been the same, something along the lines of “this is what felt right for this at the moment, it may or may not change in the future”. As for the specific reasoning behind adding some more explicit renders of it, it was a bit of an inevitable conversation we kept having as we couldn’t help but compare it to another scene from Chapter 3 and we just wanted to give it a little bit of an extra punch. Now don’t go too crazy, I did say some little additions, so the scene plays out quite similarly, just with some new images, all very much in Grogu’s gorgeous cinematic style (don’t make me edit that out, take that ONE compliment, dude).

I’m probably forgetting things, but the most important ones we wanted to share are definitely here. Keep in mind this build will also be released as an update for patrons so you can enjoy all new features as well, except for the Steam Achievements which are something very specific to Steam as a platform - aaand, that was the thing I was leaving out! We do love completing achievements of games we like ourselves, so of course we wanted to include those for you guys. I’m positive I’ve shared this story before, but the art for them was actually just a few doodles I made myself on Paint as drafts for an artist we had in mind to have as reference, but then Grogu thought them to be cute and very in-brand for us to include them as they were so… yeah. He’s been showing them off on Discord lately, so you may already guess what some of them are about, I’ll finish this dev log by sharing his personal favorite and my current favorite down below for you to make your guesses (as most achievements - but not all - these two are tied to specific choices).

Shit, they look so damn random out of context. Kinda love that for them.

We are beyond excited for what's to come in 2025, and we'll take this chance like any other to thank you once again for reading these long-ass ramblings, for supporting us, for bringing up your feelings on this story and its characters online, for sharing this game with others, for helping us believe in ourselves even when we feel like two monkeys banging on some keyboards and hoping some good will come out of it. Thank you.

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!!
