Strangers on Paper - DevLog #34

Hello Strangers! Exciting things have been happening and here’s a little (not so little, they’re never little) dev log to tell you all about them.

Chapter 3

All in all, I’d say we’re pretty happy with where we’re currently at. We’ve gotten the first few scenes out of the way in both writing and rendering, now headed towards the specifics in each path. Writing at this point is so different than when I first started, not only because of branching, but because with each line there’s the weight of ‘this may be the last chance you have to show this point’, which of course wasn’t present in Chapter 1, when there was always room for future improvement. I’m way more accustomed to writing short stories and, even if SoP is and will be short compared to what is most often done with AVNs, it will be the longest thing I’ll have finished by the time I’m done with it so… Yeah, quite intimidating but I’m loving the challenge.

I really can’t wait to show you some previews of what the bar looks like in this Chapter, since there’s a special event going on and it’s all dressed up to the nines.

For now, check this one out! (and I can pretty much assure you it’ll look different in the future, Grogu’s a perfectionist and may/will edit stuff till the very last minute).

Also, remember we talked about some comebacks? Some of you guys (most of you, I think) were pretty much on point with the characters you mentioned, so we figured a little sneak peek on that wouldn’t hurt either. Just in a “Who’s that pokemon?” fashion.

She’s back!

Furries

We’ve got the winner names for our furries! Thank you so much to each and every one of you who participated with your suggestions, we had a lot of fun reading through them. After a long debate with Grogu, we’ve picked our favorites, from which you will be able to suggest one in-game (or we may change our minds and put them up to vote for you guys, we never know).

For the dog, we picked: Padmé, Pippa and Brownie.

For the cat, we picked: Orion, Tony, and Tuxy.

We do have a personal favorite for each of them among those, but for now we’ll keep them to ourselves.

Steam

Remember last time I mentioned how we’re working our asses off to get a Steam release within the next couple months? Like, hopefully this year? By now we think we may make it happen, which is huge for us. Grogu has been tuning up the UI and tweaking the new bonus features, and let me tell ya, they’re looking fiiiiiine. Like Becca with the red hair. Those renders have been living rent-free in my mind for the past 24 hours. ANYWAY, even though working on everything regarding Steam does take time away from working on Chapter 3, we’re putting extra hours into it because… Have you looked into Argentina’s economy lately? Yeah. Any extra bucks we can make will be very much welcome if they mean we get to keep doing this, which we really, really want.

… The future?

On that note, I’d like to share a personal anecdote of mine. Last month, I got to attend EVA2024, which is a convention of video games created by Argentinian developers. And, fuck, was that inspiring. Talking to other developers in many different types of games, composers, artists, programmers, etc., was already enough to renew my excitement for the game (not that I ever really fully lost it). But, most of all, getting to try upcoming games and seeing the Argentinian cultural details many of them represent really resonated with me, and it’s something Grogu and I have been chatting about from time to time. Sure, we have left a few local gags here and there in SoP and we will continue to go in that route, but I’ve been thinking more and more that, for our next game, I’d like to go all in and do something that really feels like home. Yeah, talks of the next thing have been going on for a while now, but only once we’re headed towards the last Chapter of SoP (which I don’t even want to think about right now) we will really get into that (but then again, that is kinda exciting).

If you’ve made it up to here, thank you for reading, don’t forget to add the game to your Steam wishlist if you haven’t, and we hope you’re having a good day - if not, we hope tomorrow’s easier on you.
